Comment: It's not as if anyone's being exploited here. The visitors love to be in Beatles City, their cash goes to Apple, to the Beatles themselves and is spread round the city. Win-win-win, I'd say.

Comment: It's not as bad as you think, Ken. We're talking about pride. The Beatles were a top group. They wrote real tunes, unforgetable melodies. Most groups just can't manage that. Liverpool is proud of them, and if we make money by celebrating our pride, then so much the better.

Comment: Thanks Pete. Glad you enjoyed the Maritime Museum show. Unfortunately, the Walker gallery has cancelled the presentation I had scheduled for September. So the next public presentations based on 'Pool of Life' will be in libraries around Liverpool throughout November. Six different libraries, I think. Comment: No, Fidel Castro never made it onto the Sgt Pepper cover. There is a bearded Marxist in the montage of faces, in the second row down, on the right, sandwiched between Oliver Hardy and HG Wells - but that turns out to be Karl Marx himself.

Comment: What we feel about the Beatles is irrelevant. The point is simple and depressing, how much money can be squeezed out of the fact the Beatles lived here? The phrase on the Beatles Extra page about Apple 'aggressively monetizing the Beatles brand' just about sums it up.

Comment: Marty, it needs self-confidence, and back in the70's and 80's it felt in Liverpool as if we were deserted by the Beatles. It felt as if Liverpool was the place they left, not the place that launched them. It took a bit of time, but now we are much more confident, we feel they became what they became partl y because of Liverpool.

Comment: As a visitor to Liverpool I was very pleased to go away with a copy of Pool of Life, and I must say it made my return train journey pass all too quickly. My question to Liverpudlians is this: why has it taken so long for Liverpool to capitalize on the huge worldwide interest in the Beatles? I remember visiting Graceland, in Memphis, way back in the early 80's and it was already a shrine for Elvis fans and raking in millions.

Comment: Not enough for a book there, Fergus. The best thing to do with Kelvin Mackenzie is to ignore him. Boris's remarks were a typical Londoner's view of Liverpool, and anyone who visits the city these days has to revise those opinions. Anyway, I would rather produce books that celebrate their subjects. And I don't happen to agree that Ringo insulted Liverpool.

Subject: Francis Bacon

Comment: Can't really argue with you Bluebilly, but even so I don't regret Bacon being in the book. There are too few characters pre-18th-century: that's partly because Liverpool's history got more interesting as the port developed, but also because there are often no images of early characters from which to make a caricature. Bacon was on a shortlist that Frank Carlyle gave me when I started the book – otherwise I might never have spotted his (tenuous) connection. You can't deny he's interesting to read about, and I certainly found him enjoyable to draw. And, since there is a certain amount in the book about the development of political democracy, it is very interesting that someone at that time could be an MP of an important large town yet never visit the place. Not a great justification, I admit, but in the end, I feel the book's no worse for Bacon's cameo appearance.

Comment: Bacon seems an odd choice for your book when his connection seems to be he was MP but he never visited Liverpool. He was an MP for several other places too, (e.g. Taunton, Middlesex, Ipswich, Southampton etc.) during his glittering political career down in London, so Liverpool must have meant just about nothing to him.

Comment: Thanks for the approval Kat. As for Johnny Lyden... of course you'd expect a caricaturist to be on the side of the actor and filmmaker here. Portrayals are always versions: they are no use if they are just clones. At their best they have a life of their own while reminding us of the original in some way. What counts most, surely, is whether Drew's portrayal felt right for the film. Does it? (I haven't seen Sid & Nancy for years.)

Comment: Bernie, I don't remember the Sex Pistols from the 70's, I wasn't born until 1980 but the review you put on from Amazon is wrong as Drew doesn't speak with a Scouse accent in the film, he does speak with a London accent. I believe to start with John Lydon was happy with the film being made, Drew even flew to New York to meet him and spent the weekend drinking with him, in fact they got so drunk Drew could not remember anything of the weekend.

Comment: There's one part Drew Schofied gets a bit of flak for, and that's when he played Johnny Rotten (John Lyden) in Sid & Nancy. Here's a typical customer review of Sid & Nancy on Amazon (reviewby C.McDonald) "This could have been the greatest punk rock biopic ever...instead, it ranks just below "The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle" on the list of Lies Perpetrated Against the Sex Pistols. It's easy to see why John Lydon despises this film...it does nothing but mistreat him the entire time. It makes him out to be a manipulative, egotistical tyrant...which is about as far from the truth as one can come. Drew Schofield is not necessarily a bad actor, but his characterization in no way resembles the real John. And on top of the obvious differences in the character of the real John and this concocted film image of him, Schofield neither looked nor sounded like John. Let's face it...he kept the same hair colour throughout the entire movie...John changed his hair color more frequently than he did his clothing in those days. And as for facial resemblance, there was none. And John doesn't speak with a Scouse accent...never has. " ...Not sure if this is a criticism of Drew or the director. Anyone out there old enough to remember the Punk years? Any opinions of Drew's portrayal of Johnny Rotten?

Comment: I always mention Varian Fry when I give 'Hitler's List' presentations, since he is such an unrecognised hero. He was the American volunteer who came to France with a load of visas and about 200 names of people on Hitler's list of so-called degenerates who were stranded after the Nazis overran France. In the end, Fry managed to rescue over 1500 people, helping them escape usually over the mountains into Spain and on to the USA. Stuart Scholes has e-mailed me about a film about Fry. It was called ‘Varian’s War’ made in 2001 starring William Hurt, Julia Ormond, Lynn Redgrave et al. I am surprised not to have seen it around. But there do seem to be some grave questions about its portrayal of Fry and the other real-life characters concerned. There is a lot to read about this on the web, starting with the link below. There is a dramatic tale to be told, and it really should be told. So it is depressing to hear this film referred to by the son of Fry's colleague as 'dreadfully inaccurate and demeaning to Fry'.

Comment: To answer your question, Kelly, the list I started with was always being added to whenever I spoke to anyone in Liverpool about the project. But I was also pruning it too, in order to stop the book growing too big. There could have been many more actors, for instance – or footballers, obviously. Or more recent artists in the art chapter. Bands like the Searchers or the Seekers, or more recent bands. It's not that I was unaware of these people. In some cases, with earlier characters like Thomas Steers (who built the first dock), there was no visual reference to be found. In other cases I found some people made particularly good caricatures, so they were included. No doubt I made one or two decisions that you might think of as quirky – but I found that the list that finally evolved worked for me in providing a variety of characters and simultaneously pushing the story of the city forward. I do regret some omissions. Some were dropped at the last minute to squeeze the page numbers down: they include Chambre Hardman, Josh Kirby and Yoko Ono from the Art chapter, and several actors.

Subject: Red bias? Who, me?

Comment: I am a cricket lover, and had little interest in football until I moved to Liverpool. Here, I can't fail to be interested in something that seems to run through the veins of the city, But I don't find myself siding with either reds or blues: I'm pleased if either team do well. Bias never came into the choices for the book, but neither did an anxiety to be seen to be even-handed. I gave up at an early stage on trying to be definitive, but concentrated on people who were themselves interesting, or through whom I could tell interesting stories. Hillsborough, for instance, which happens to be an LFC story, and racism in football crowds, which pointed to including John Barnes. I always knew that the intensity with which the game is followed here, and the commitment and depth of knowledge shown by the average Scouser, was going to mean that the football section of the book would seem inadequate.

I'm also an Andrew Schofield fan -ever since Alan Bleasdale's TV series GBH, when Drew played a wonderfully nasty left-wing agitator who turned out to be... but I won't spoil it for anyone who's just bought a dvd of GBH. Suffice it to say that the best moments were when Drew was onscreen. And he's certainly got that factor x on stage too, hasn't he? I saw Brick Up The Mersey Tunnel on Monday, and your eye just gets drawn to him all the time. Add comic genius and musical skill and we've got a top actor, one of the best around. He seems determined to be a man of mystery. His biog in theatre programmes is just a bald list of productions. You may notice he is the only person in Pool of Life whose birth date I had to guess; even his agent doesn't know it, nor Kat, who runs a website dedicated to him. I had almost given up putting him in the book when I came across extracts from a taped interview with him in a book called An Actor's Place, by Pelham McMahon and Pam Brooks, which is a history of the Liverpool Rep Company at the Playhouse.
